UXPA honors Dr. Dick Horst with 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award

UXPA International honored Dr. Dick Horst with its 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award.  This award was presented to Dr. Horst at the 2019 UXPA International Conference in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Dr. Dick Horst is an experimental psychologist and human factors engineer with extensive experience in applied behavioral research, systems development, and usability engineering. In September 1989 he founded UserWorks (originally Man-Made Systems Corporation) and is its president and owner today. Dr. Horst is an innovator, thought leader, employer, consultant, mentor, and this year’s recipient of the UXPA International Lifetime Achievement Award.

Dr. Horst is regarded as an industry expert in developing, aiding, and presenting usable services and products. With nearly 30 years of experience, he has led teams working in the private, nonprofit, government, and academic sectors and helped develop more usable products in the form of office equipment, medical devices, paper forms, websites, kiosks, among many others.

Many of Dr. Horst’s colleagues credit him with hiring them into their first UX-related job and that that initial position, with his mentorship, provided an invaluable start to their meaningful careers. They praise not only his mentorship but his long-standing community outreach as a speaker and thought leader to HCI/IA students at the University of Maryland College Park and the University of Maryland Baltimore County. In addition he regularly hosts class visits at UserWorks where students receive firsthand looks at the workings of a UX firm.

Through UserWorks Dr. Horst has conducted numerous projects for the U.S. Dept of Education, Federal Student Aid, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the U.S. Postal Service, Spotify, and the U.S. Department of Transportation, among others.

Dr. Horst received advanced degrees from Carnegie-Mellon, is a barbershop chorus member, choir singer, and devoted grandfather. For his outstanding contributions to the field of UX and his longstanding contributions on UXPA International, we are pleased to honor Dr. Horst with the 2019 UXPA International Lifetime Achievement Award.
